Moveable pulpits

A visit to the St. Michael’s Church is not only worthwhile because of its quiet atmosphere, but also from an art historical point of view. In this section of the website you will find brief descriptions of nine locations within the St. Michael’s Church.

Romanesque-Gothic Corner

The special feature of this entrance is the completely preserved tympanon, a relief of the upper outside arch, which depicts a cross on a pillar amidst a grapevine.

The North Chapels

To your left is the Saint Anthony Chapel (1) with its Baroque lantern cupola with eight windows.

The Classicist Sculptor Franz Käßmann

The four altars of the transept which you see from this point are all works of Franz Käßmann (1751-1837).

The Werdenberg Chapel

The family of the Counts of Werdenberg had this chapel designed in 1627 in Baroque style. The chapel became the family chapel.

The High Altar

The high altar was designed in 1781 by Jean Baptist d'Avrange and among others constructed by Carl Merville.

Organ and Gravestones

Turning and facing the church exit, notice the largest playable Baroque organ (1) of Austria, built in 1714 by J. Sieber.

The Gothic Chapel

The whole architecture of the Gothic Cross Chapel goes back to its origins around 1350.

The Three South Side Chapels

The three chapels before you are the Saint Ann Chapel, the Vesper Picture Chapel and the Saint Blase Chapel.

Frescoes, Capitals and Portals

From this point you can discover frescoes, capitals and portals from different epochs.
